Welcome, DeScribees of '09

Hey everyone.

Danny and I are amped that so many of you signed up today. We're going to hold off announcing any big events until O Week is done and dusted, so spend this week worrying about notepacks and where they could've possibly hidden Building Y.

In the meantime, introduce yourselves! Tell us about what you write, and how you write (the answer to this is not, "Duh, with a pen." I mean, do you write at the same time each day? In the same place?) Tell us about the books and authors that do it for you. Tell us about your influences. What you expect from your time at Deakin. What you want to do with your writing. Any great advice you've read or heard.

Nice. We'll talk soon.

Rhys, I'll go first. I think it's important that everyone, executive, returning members and new members all get to know each other.

So I'm Danny, second year Deakin writing student and DeScribe club president. I believe a good writer isn't restricted by genre or medium, and lets the work find the best way to be told, whether script, lyric, novel, or whatever. It's something I like to practice.

I'm currently writing a young adults novel, a couple of short stories, a graphic novel, and have a few other projects on the shelf: a couple of musicals, a screen play, another novel and a few other misc stuff.

I write every Friday and Saturday night at a cafe, where I have a muse in the form of a waitress. I'm superstitious when writing and when I'm on a roll I like to mimic the conditions that started the momentum. I always type direct and only use pen and paper for notes and problem solving.

I work in a bank doing customer service, I spend far too much time at the gym and I am a romantic at heart, despite being an asshole on top.

Kieron/Defron

Postby ronnie on Sun Mar 08, 2009 7:54 pm

Sup Yo? I go by Kieron or my emcee name Defron. Proud procrastinator, masturbator, decapitator, word creater, balloon inflater, caped crusader, Power Ranger, mind invader that is smarter than a fifth grader. What to say, I'm pretty much the definition of fucking ill; quite literally, talk to me and I'll elaborate. I'm an intellectual who likes to frequently swear, confusing the FUCK out of everyone on a regular basis.

How do I write, hey? Sometimes I wanna sit down and write some shit, and in those times gold can happen. Sometimes I'm just inspired and will use the closest thing to a pen and paper I have (you may find sonnets and soliloquies of mine in your local male urinal). I believe that there a re particular monets when we are at our best creatively, and we dont always achieve our best because we may be doing something completely different, unaware that we are in that window of literary brilliance.

What do I write, hey? Short stories mostly, I want to write anovel eventually, but these little pieces that eventually get longer and longer let me indulge myself and I think fragmented elements of lives makes for interesting reading experiences, or sleeping experiences. I am a slam poet, so I write free verse poems, some done heavily in an emcee style some in more of a speeded lyrical style without actually rhyming. I am an emcee, specializing in freestyling, songwriting and dabbling in battling. I have a myspace ( gratutious plug www.myspace.com/defronmc) and am working on more tracks (two of which are inspired by literary wet dreams The Watchmen and Blood Meridian). I am also a battle emcee, I've come second in both Freestyle Fed Square 09 & PushOver 09. yep, honarary runner up is my name.

My influences, hey? Writing: Raymond Carver who showed me the poetry of simplicity and Cormac McCarthy who showed me the simplicity in poetry. Emceeing: Brother Ali, R.A. The Rugged Man, Aesop Rock, Nas, and Notorious B.I.G. Poetry: Sylvia Plath, Raymond Carver, Gemineye, Saul Williams. Two dudes from Melbourne called Geoff Lemon and Anthony O'Sullivan. General Awesomeness: Kung Fu Panda.

Thats all the self indulgence I can manage at the moment. Enjoy your time at deakin, and if you want to see my freestyle skills come holla at me.

Peace.
You take the venom out of a cobra what have you got? You've got a ... belt.
