This is your chance to mix with other writing students from Deakin and Holmesglen in a relaxed atmosphere (this means we have the Tom Thumb bar to ourselves - and the bar is most undoubtedly open for business). Twelve students from each campus will then entertain all present in a danceoff to the death. No! I made bit that up.
What will happen is the students will perform their flash fiction/ poetry/ script scene while you get progressively tipsier and holler your appreciation*. I mean clap appreciatively. There will be laughter. There will be guest readings from respected Melbourne poets Dorothy Porter and Josephine Rowe. There will be music. There will be toilet breaks.
If you have ever been interested in the Melbourne writing scene, this is the opportunity to sample an open mic session without having to travel into the inner city, find some unmarked bar in a strange laneway and get sneered at by scenesters in berets**. This is about experiencing the works of emerging writers with the same dreams and interests as you. You should have most of your assignments done by then***, so come and let your hair down.
Sweet. See you there then.

* Tipsiness and hollering not included
** This is not a cliche
*** Except the one where you got a fortnight's extension because your grandmother's cat Flopsy was run over
