Hey for '09

Well hello, everyone.

My name is Rhys but I tend to use 'Marmalade' online. My two best friends and I used to have a routine where we pretended to be old British generals when we got bored and I was General Melchett Marmalade. I don't expect that sentence to make sense to anyone but me, Dee and Ad.

I hadn't written anything prior to 2004 ... well, I had to submit five pages of samples to get into the Prof Writing and Editing diploma at Holmesglen, and I think I wrote three of them for the application. Um, did the diploma over three years, transferred to Deakin in '07 and entering Honours this year.

I write a variety of stuff: mostly short stories and poetry (which is nowhere near as lame as you are led to believe), but also children's chapter books and bits and pieces of other formats like script. I suppose I tend towards literary fiction (except the kid's stuff) and my thing right now is magic realism, but I won't bore you trying to explain what that is. I've been published in a few places like Verandah and Short & Twisted. I have a poem about truck driving coming out for the Dust Poems collective (being shown at this year's Sydney Show), a short story about cows for a Teacher's Solutions collection and a couple of other stories floating around, waiting for a thumbs up or down (and if my story 'Smallholdings' gets into Sleepers Almanac, the milky bars are on me :D.

Anyway, Danny and I formed DeScribe last year so that all the Deakin students interested in books and writing would have a community to find like-minded people at uni who want to get involved with the Melbourne writing scene. So anything else you want to know, ask away.
