BAKING!

Postby tatterdemalion on Sat Jun 14, 2008 3:52 pm

I like to bake.
It's my new hobby now.
I recently told an old friend I'd taken up baking, and she said, "But your cooking is horrible."
Which was true. But I seem to have grown an ability for it. When I make muffins now, the chocolate chips don't all sink to the bottom and get stuck to the tray and ruin the tray.
Yay!

Anyway, so here are some of my most recent culinary concoctions:
- beef and vegetable stew
- chicken, corn and noodle soup
- pumpkin scones (this afternoon actually. Magical.)
- raspberry and white chocolate muffins
- beef parmigiana
- spinach and tomato pasta bake
om nom nom.

Does anyone have any more suggestions for delicious, cheapish winter foodlets? I'm hungry and eager!

Oh, and, like, if you also like cooking, totally talk about that, too.

Haha I guess it's true that practice does make perfect, because I once had a friend who burnt anything she cooked. And Now-a-days she's cooking exotic raspberry flambés!! So keep at it!
I too enjoy the odd spot of cooking (there is a subtle difference between baking and cooking), yet it seems to have worn off a little now that I have to do it all the time, what with living away from home and all.
But I have taken to the challenge of making scrumptious concoctions on a student budget. I must say I am a wee bit of a quiche conquerer!
mmmmm mm I just love a mean quiche.

Um, delicious and cheap...

I like to make my own Italian Baked Beans, which might sound weird, but once you eat these, you'll never go back to boring old tinned beans. So with some fetta and wilted spinach leaves stirred through and on sourdough toast...oh yeah, breakfast heaven.

I have an awesome recipe for banana bread/ cake which is just healthy enough to justify as a breakfast food.

Lamb shank soup? I sympathise with my vegetarian friends, I really do - I'm on a 'reduced meat' diet and I even eat tofu...but this and bacon are two reasons I would totally struggle to stop carnivorising.

Speaking of which, I have a lamb roast recipe somewhere with rosemary, garlic, salted lemons and olive paste that is the bomb. The cooking smells makes Ronnie the vegetarian cry and leave the house for a while (he's an ethical vegetarian, so he loves the smell of lamb roast).

My goal for this week - find the most decadent chocolate cake recipe on the internets and make it. Warm from the oven. With cream. And icecream. Oh, baby.

We used to bake cookies (well, my mom did most of it; I just threw the cherry bits in when she asked me to) when I was younger, but since now she's working, we're kinda lazy to do that.

My cooking skills, unfortunately, are sadly lacking, but I do love making fried pasta. The method's pretty much the same as making fried rice; just replace the rice with pasta (so far I've been using San Remo's Elbows; going to try it with Curls next time around), and, in my case, leave out the veggies and dump copious amounts of pepper into it.

[Mmmm... pepper... *drools*]

Made that little discovery when I accidentally used the wrong opening and dumped practically half the container into the thing.

My mom uses soy sauce when she makes them, but I've never tried doing that, since I have shaky hands, and the whole thing would just get uneven and end up being salty and intolerable in random places. *shudders*

Christine baked cookies today. She burned them good.

But yeah, I don't bake. I watch people bake. I'm very good at that. And I've been told I've got quite the talent for eating.

I love looking for new recipes (normally on the wondrous object called the Internet) and the satisfaction that comes when you have successfully made a new delicacy, it's just something to add to your resume, even if you never make it again!! Haha I guess I enjoy the satisfaction of conquering something that was once unknown to me. I love making cakes the best, probably because they're the yummiest. But have since moved myself , somewhat reluctantly, into the field of savories. oh the things one has to sacrifice to stay healthy and relatively alive.
