A rather late introduction.

Who are you? What classes are you taking? What do you prefer to write? Five favourite authors?

A rather late introduction.

Hello everyone. I've always enjoyed writing since high school, gravitating towards fiction-essay questions instead of its polar opposite (imaginative juices currently a tad dried up from lack of use =p), and I just found out about DeScribe from last week's DUSA email.

Sigh. Mid-semester already. Sorry for missing the first meeting.

Anyway, back to the intro: My name's I-Hsiang, and I'm a third year Commerce student, majoring in Accounting and Finance. Writing's been a hobby for me (I say 'hobby' 'cuz I don't think I'm good enough to write The Coveted First Book That Will Blow The Industry Away And Make The Bigwigs Sit Up), but nowadays I've been resigned to the occasional 'blogging' due to the age-old sad reality of assignments =(

I usually read anything that comes my way (paying special attention to Horror/Murder/Fantasy, anything with violence), and I stay clear from Romance and Chick Lit because they bore the crap out of me. Five authors coming to mind at the moment:
1) Terry Pratchett
2) Robert Jordan
3) George Orwell (even though I've only gotten my grubby hands on two of his works so far)
4) HP Lovecraft
5) Agatha Christie

Welcome on board I-Hsiang,

Don't sweat about missing the first meeting. This club's still getting off the ground; we hope to have a semi-regular afternoon at Einstein's (relax, have a coffee or a beer and talk about books etc.), as well as an open mic night later in the semester, where people can read their fiction. As well, we have The Flasher writing competition, which is a perfect place to begin your fiction career. Check under the 'Opportunities' link.

I know what you mean about assignments. I'm putting off finishing one right now. But, whatever you're writing (blogs, essays, the list goes on), it's good for your writing style. Practice makes perfect.

I'm a big fan of Orwell, and loved Pratchett a few years back. So sad to hear he has Alzheimer's...I hope they can reverse it with these new treatments before it does too much damage.

Anyway, why don't you tell us about some of your favourite books under the 'Books' link - get people excited about the books that excite you. Don't be afraid to post; we don't bite. We'll let you know about upcoming meetings.

Cheers,
Rhys

Thanks Rhys. I received yesterday's email about The Flasher competition, and I do plan to enter. I just hope that that spark of inspiration comes before the month ends.

Haha, I have a paper due every week. I do hope to improve on my writing style, though, because sometimes what's in my head, doesn't really translate so well on paper =p

Yeah... I read somewhere that there aren't many survivors for Alzheimer's. But I heard that it hasn't affected his ability to write. *knock on wood*. At any rate, medical research's been plodding on, so I guess we just have to hope for the best.

Alright, will do. Thanks for the welcome Rhys!

Cheers
I-Hsiang

Don't worry if you can't think of anything - next month there'll be a new topic to work with!

Not really a late introduction, actually quite the opposite, still early days.

@tatterdemalion: Hehe yeah... actually, I've managed to come up with something already, just gotta work it out in full. The looming deadline is great practice for squeezing something out last minute. Teehee.

@Danny: Thanks Danny. I figured it was kinda late since it's mid-semester now, and I only just joined... =p
